What the search involves.
A nationwide utility engineering and consulting practice is bringing on a senior transmission engineer to run technical delivery for a mixed slate of new-build, rebuild, reconductor, and system-improvement work spanning tower, pole, and underground line construction.
Line work here isn't limited to one build type: you'd move between tower, pole, and underground jobs depending on what the portfolio needs that quarter, with full authority to seal your own designs instead of waiting on someone else's sign-off. Mentoring the next tier of engineers is built into the job, not an extra on top of it.
Responsibilities
- Carry a portfolio of transmission projects at different stages at once, planning through construction support and commissioning, keeping each on budget and on schedule
- Study system-wide transmission capacity and reliability needs and turn the findings into defined project scope
- Seal complete transmission design packages under your own PE license: equipment and material ratings, plan-and-profile drawings, sag-and-tension calculations, structure drawings, and staking sheets across tower, pole, and underground construction, ready for issue as for-construction and bid packages
- Draft the equipment and material specs a project needs, and bring geotechnical, structural, and civil input into the design early rather than as an afterthought
- Handle the regulatory side of a project: permitting support, compliance documentation, and the filings tied to it
- Stay the client's go-to technical contact through the life of a project, including time in the field for construction, commissioning, outage response, and emergencies
- Coach engineers coming up behind you, aiming for a team that can carry multi-phase work without you in the room
- Pitch in on proposals, hiring, and cleaning up how the group runs projects, on top of your own project load
Requirements
- Electrical or civil engineering degree, or an electrical engineering technology degree, from an ABET-accredited program; power-systems coursework a plus
- Currently PE-licensed, and open to picking up reciprocity licenses in other states as the work requires
- A decade-plus of hands-on transmission design and engineering, with at least 2 of those years spent formally leading or supervising other engineers
- Comfortable working to NESC, IEEE, ANSI, and RUS standards, and familiar with the OSHA rules specific to transmission and utility construction
- Deep experience across tower, pole, and underground transmission design, structural support, and transmission protection and control work, built hands-on alongside utility staff, contractors, and cross-discipline project teams
- Willing to be on-site as much as at a desk: uneven terrain, active construction areas, and whatever the weather is doing that day
- Clean driving record and a valid license, eligible to work in the US, and able to clear background, driving, and drug-screening checks
Nice to have
- Exposure to substation, distribution, SCADA, AMI, or OMS work outside the core transmission lane
- Some prior team-lead or supervisory experience beyond running your own project scope
