What the search involves.
An engineering and consulting firm serving electric utility clients nationwide is hiring an experienced substation engineer to take the technical lead on a growing slate of new-build, expansion, and system-improvement substation projects, including grant-funded and multi-year capital programs.
This is a true concept-to-commissioning seat: the same engineer scopes the study, carries PE-seal authority on the finished design, and is still in the field for startup and outage support. A formal mentorship remit comes with it too, so the firm's next generation of engineering leaders runs through this role.
Responsibilities
- Run several substation projects at once, from early planning through construction and commissioning, owning scope, schedule, budget, and quality along the way
- Lead system-level planning studies covering substation capacity, reliability, and overall performance
- Produce and PE-seal complete substation design packages, covering layout, electrical design, grounding, equipment selection, bus configuration, structural steel, protection and control, relay schematics, wiring, and SCADA integration, through to for-construction and bid-ready issue
- Write equipment and material specifications and construction requirements, and develop protection and control relay settings
- Support permitting, regulatory filings, and compliance documentation tied to substation work
- Act as the client's day-to-day technical contact, including field engineering support during construction, commissioning, outage restoration, and emergency response
- Mentor and develop engineers and technical staff, building a team capable of running complex, multi-phase projects on its own
- Contribute to proposals, recruiting, and process-improvement work alongside core project delivery
Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering or electrical engineering technology from an ABET-accredited program, ideally with a power-systems emphasis
- Active PE license, with willingness to pursue additional-state licensure by reciprocity
- 10+ years in electric utility substation design and engineering, including at least 2 years in a formal engineering-leadership or supervisory capacity
- Working knowledge of NESC, IEEE, ANSI, and RUS requirements, plus the OSHA rules that apply to substation and utility work
- Broad grounding across transmission, substation, distribution, protection and control, SCADA, AMI, and OMS systems, with a track record working directly alongside utility staff, contractors, and multidisciplinary teams
- Comfortable in the field as well as the office: walking active construction sites on uneven terrain and in variable weather
- Valid driver's license and eligibility to work in the US; able to pass standard background, driving-record, and drug-screening checks

- Experience with grant-funded infrastructure work or multi-year capital improvement programs
- Prior formal people-management experience, beyond direct project supervision
